Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior the Evolution of Verbal Behavior

چکیده

Evolutionary theory has always been plagued by scantiness of evidence. We see the products of evolution but not much of the process. Most of the story happened long ago, and little remains of the early stages. Especially few traces of behavior remain; only recently were there artifacts that could endure. Verbal behavior left no artifacts until the appearance of writing, and that was a very late stage. We shall probably never know precisely what happened, but we ought to be able to say what might have happened-that is, what kinds of variations and what kinds of contingencies of selection could have brought verbal behavior into existence. Speculation about natural selection is supported by current research on genetics; the evolution of a social environment or culture is supported by the experimental analysis of behavior. Strictly speaking, verbal behavior does not evolve. It is the product of a verbal environment or what linguists call a language, and it is the verbal environment that evolves. Since a verbal environment is composed of listeners, it is understandable that linguists emphasize the listener. (A question often asked, for example, is, "How is it possible for a person to understand a potentially infinite number of sentences?" In contrast, a behavioral analysis asks, "How is it possible for a person to say a potentially infinite number of sentences?") This paper, then, is about the evolution of a verbal environment as the source of the behavior of the speaker. The plausibility of a reconstruction depends in part upon the size of the variations that are assumed to have occurred; the smaller the variations, the more plausible the explanation. Web-making in the spider, for example, could scarcely have appeared all at once in its present form as a variation. More plausible is a series of small steps. The excretion that eventually became silk may have begun

Intervention Analysis in Teaching Reading Comprehension through Dynamic Assessment: Heron’s Perspective

Teachers’ verbal behavior is a key contributor to provision of appropriate indirect intervention in language learning contexts; however, it is surprising that professionals in ELT, to date, have not proposed a structured oral/verbal framework to deliver intervention and assistance in language learning contexts. To help redress this gap, Heron’s Six-Category Intervention Analysis was adapted to ...

Impact of verbal explanation on parental acceptance level of different behavior management techniques in dental office

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Parents’ attitudes towards different aspects of dentistry especially the use of behavior management techniques (BMTs) can greatly effect a child’s cooperation in a dental office. The present quasi-experimental study was conducted with the aim to assess the effect of a verbal explanation on parents’ acceptance level of the most common BMTs used in pediatric dentistry.METHODS:...

Microstructural Evolution of X45CrNiW189 Valve Steel During Hot Deformation

The hot compression tests were carried on X45CrNiW189 valve steel (X45) in the temperature range of 1000– 1200 °C and the strain rate range of 0.004 – 0.5 s-1 in order to study the high temperature softening behavior of this steel. For the exact prediction of flow stress, the effective stress-effective strain curves were obtained from experiments under various conditions. On the basis of experi...

Experimental study of the diesel injector nozzle sediment effect on fuel spray behavior

High pressure amount of fuel in new generation diesel engines’ injector equipped with multiple and small nozzle holes has created significant improvement in the outgoing spray behavior and engine performance. On the other hand, poor fuel quality and injector nozzle embedded in high temperature combustion chamber form fundamental deposits on the nozzle leading to fuel spray inappropriate behavio...

The effects of a safety educational intervention on promoting safety behavior at textile workers

Introduction: Behavioral science is an inseparable part of a comprehensive accident prevention strategy in a work place. This study reports a behavior approach used to evaluate the effects of an occupational safety training intervention on industrial textile workers. Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental based on Solomon 4-group design participatory study, which is conducted as pretest-po...

An experimental study on hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flow in coarse-grained porous media

The equations of fluids in porous media are very useful in designing the rockfill and diversion dams, gabions, breakwaters and ground water reserves. Researches have been showed that the Forchheimer equation is not sufficient for the analysis of hydraulic behavior of free-surface radial flows; because, in these flows, in addition to the hydraulic gradient and velocity, the variable of radius is...
